Selling a car in Queensland
Can I sell my car?
Almost certainly, yes. In nearly every situation people ask us about - no registration, no roadworthy, the car will not start, it has been written off, it has been sitting for years - the car can still be sold to a wrecking yard.
The reason is simple. Most rules people worry about exist to govern cars that will be driven on the road again. A car sold to be dismantled and recycled is a different situation, so most of those rules do not apply to it.
The question underneath the question
When people ring us, the words are usually about registration or paperwork. What they are actually asking is one of two things: am I allowed to do this, and am I going to get in trouble afterwards.
Both answers are reassuring. Selling a car to a licensed dismantler is an ordinary, legal transaction that happens thousands of times a year in Queensland. And once the paperwork is done properly at the point of sale, the car stops being your responsibility.
What actually matters
There are really only two things that need to be true. The car needs to be yours to sell, which means you can show photo ID and something establishing that you own it. And we need to be able to physically reach it with a truck.
That is the list. Not the service history, not the second key, not whether it starts, not whether the rego is current.
If you are not sure what you have
A lot of people cannot say what variant their car is, what engine is in it, or exactly what year it was built. That is completely normal and it does not put you at a disadvantage.
Make, rough year, and the suburb it is parked in is enough for us to give you a number. If you are not sure about something, leave it out and we will work it out together.
